There is a little known secret in the back office Windows file server world.
Samba.
Samba is an Open Source Software suite that provides seamless file and print
services to Windows clients via the Common Internet File System(CIFS) protocol.
Samba can also act as a Primary Domain Controller(PDC) to allow windows clients
to authenticate their logons.
The key benefits to Samba are:
- Cost - Samba is
Open Source/Free Software.
There are no license or renewal costs.
Also, Samba's hardware requirements are less than an equivalent
Windows' server.
- Speed - Linux is a very efficient Unix implementation
and can be tuned specifically for file and print serving.
Here
is a recent IT Week article comparing Windows 2000 and Samba.
- Scalability - Unix is infinitely scalable. Linux is a
true multi-tasking, multi-processor Unix
implementation and scales directly with additional hardware.
- Ease of Use - Samba is managed via a configuration
file, which is optionally managed via a web interface. Samba
requires no Windows' registry voodoo or frequent restarts.
Since the file server is Unix based, remote logins, and thus
remote management, is a snap.
Implementing a Samba server improves performance, reduces costs,
and is easier to maintain. Why haven't you called CompuCrew already?
